Power consumers face Rs23.33bn extra burden

ISLAMABAD: Power distribution companies have approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), seeking to recover an additional Rs23.33 billion from electricity consumers under the quarterly adjustment mechanism.

The request covers the third quarter of 2026, from July to September, and proposes adjustments to electricity tariffs based on various costs incurred by power distribution companies. NEPRA will decide whether electricity prices should increase and determine the additional per-unit charges after reviewing the application.

According to the application, the distribution companies have proposed recovering Rs38.92 billion under capacity charges. They have also sought an increase of Rs5.597 billion under operations and maintenance expenses.

However, the companies have requested a reduction of Rs29.25 billion in adjustments related to the impact of the incremental electricity consumption package.

The proposed quarterly adjustment will also apply to consumers of K-Electric, meaning customers in Karachi could also be affected by NEPRA’s decision.

NEPRA has scheduled a hearing on the application for November 17, during which it will examine the proposed adjustments and review the financial claims submitted by the power distribution companies.

The regulator’s decision will determine the final impact on electricity bills and whether consumers will face additional charges under the quarterly adjustment for July to September 2026.
