Actress Maha Hasan breaks silence on childhood harassment

Television actress Maha Hasan has opened up about a traumatic experience from her early years, revealing that she was subjected to harassment as a child — a disclosure that has prompted widespread support and calls for more open conversations around child protection.

Speaking in a recent interview on a private YouTube channel, the Ishqiya and Yunhi star shared a deeply personal account of abuse she faced at a young age, describing the incident as “terrifying” and one that left a lasting impact on her sense of self, faith, and understanding of the world.

When I was little, I was spoken to in the wrong way, I was touched inappropriately,” she said, without naming the perpetrator. “At that time, I didn’t even understand that this was all wrong.

The actress lamented that she had not pursued legal action at the time due to a lack of awareness. “I wish I had filed an FIR back then,” she added, reflecting on how young victims often internalise blame and confusion in the absence of societal awareness or support.

During the candid conversation, which touched upon several facets of her life and career, Ms Hasan said the incident deeply affected her emotionally and spiritually. “My faith was shaken. I started questioning religion, values, and even my own existence,” she revealed.

However, the actress said she has now found healing through therapy and reconnecting with faith. “Now my faith is stronger than ever, and I am deeply satisfied with where I am in my life. Prayer is a source of peace,” she noted.

While Ms Hasan refrained from naming any individual or offering further specifics, her disclosure has been met with a wave of support from fans and colleagues, many of whom praised her courage in addressing such a sensitive issue.

The revelation has once again brought into focus the challenges faced by victims of child abuse in Pakistan, where cultural taboos and fear of stigma often prevent survivors from speaking out or seeking justice.

Advocates say cases like Ms Hasan’s highlight the urgent need for awareness campaigns, legal reforms, and support systems to help victims come forward without fear of shame or retaliation.

Ms Hasan, known for her nuanced performances in Safar Tamam HuaNand, and other popular dramas, has become the latest public figure to use her platform to raise awareness about harassment and abuse — a conversation that continues to gain momentum in Pakistan’s entertainment and social sectors.
