ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Friday that breaches of binding treaties were undermining respect for international law. He made the remarks during a meeting with Inter‑Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Dr Tulia Ackson on the sidelines of the IPU Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations in New York.
Gilani pointed to the non‑implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir and accused India of weaponising water resources. He said India’s decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance set a “dangerous precedent” that violated international law and threatened millions of lives in Pakistan.
On Afghanistan, Gilani said Pakistan wanted a stable and prosperous neighbour but remained concerned about militant violence emanating from Afghan soil. He noted that groups such as Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan, the Baloch Liberation Army, Al‑Qaeda and Islamic State Khorasan continued to operate there, and argued that the Taliban had failed to meet its counter‑terrorism obligations.
Ackson praised Pakistan’s role in promoting dialogue and multilateral diplomacy, according to statements released by Radio Pakistan and the country’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
