Ramazan moon to align above Holy Kaaba tonight at 10:40pm Saudi time

The head of the Astronomical Society has said that the crescent marking the Islamic month of Ramazan is forecast to appear above the Holy Kaaba late tonight, offering a notable celestial sight for observers in Saudi Arabia and surrounding regions.

According to astronomical calculations, the moon is expected to align vertically above the Kaaba in Makkah at approximately 10:40 pm Saudi Arabian Standard Time. Experts described the event as a routine but remarkable alignment that can assist observers in identifying the direction of the Qibla with precision.

Astronomers explained that on Saturday, February 28, 2026, the moon will be between 87 and 89 percent illuminated, making it highly visible in clear skies. At that stage, the moon will be roughly 11 to 12 days old, placing it in the waxing gibbous phase—nearing full illumination—within its average 29.5-day lunar cycle.

Specialists noted that when the moon reaches this position directly above the Kaaba, individuals who track its exact placement can use it as a natural reference point to confirm the Qibla direction. Such alignments are often highlighted by astronomical bodies as educational opportunities for the public.

They further added that because of the high illumination level, surface features including craters and darker maria may be seen more distinctly through telescopes and even binoculars. However, the clarity of the view will depend largely on local weather conditions, atmospheric clarity, and light pollution levels.

Officials emphasized that while the alignment will be visible for a limited window of time, skywatchers with clear horizons are likely to witness a bright and prominent lunar display.
