Punjab launches Rs30 million film fund, industry hopeful for revival

In a move aimed at reviving Pakistan’s struggling film industry, the Punjab government has announced a Rs30 million Punjab Film Fund to support local filmmakers, offering renewed hope to a sector that has long complained about financial constraints and limited production opportunities.

The initiative was unveiled under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister, with the first tranche of Rs15 million already released to approved filmmakers.

Under the funding model, filmmakers will receive the grant in phases, 50 percent upon signing agreements, while the remaining amount will be released after key production milestones, including the completion of filming.

Several prominent figures from Pakistan’s entertainment industry have been approved under the scheme. These include actors and producers such as Humayun Saeed, Shaan Shahid, and filmmaker Yasir Nawaz.

Writers and producers like Vasay Chaudhry and veteran filmmaker Syed Noor are also among those selected.

For years, industry insiders have highlighted funding shortages as one of the biggest reasons why Pakistan produces fewer films compared to regional cinema industries.

Actors and filmmakers have repeatedly noted that many promising scripts fail to reach the screen due to the lack of financial backing, rising production costs, and limited cinema infrastructure.

In past interviews, prominent stars such as Humayun Saeed and Shaan Shahid have emphasized that while talent and stories exist, the absence of consistent funding and institutional support has slowed the industry’s growth.

The newly launched fund is being seen as a small but important step toward addressing these concerns. By providing structured financial assistance and encouraging new productions, the initiative could help filmmakers bring fresh stories to Pakistani cinema screens.

Industry observers say that if the programme expands in the coming years, it may play a key role in rebuilding confidence in local film production and strengthening Pakistan’s cinematic landscape.
