PM orders crackdown on fuel smuggling amid crisis

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to intensify action against the smuggling and illegal hoarding of petroleum products amid concerns over regional developments and fuel supply pressures.

The directive was issued during a high-level meeting held to review the country’s petroleum supply chain, conservation strategies, and measures to maintain market stability. The prime minister stressed that strict enforcement would be ensured, warning that those involved in illegal activities would face firm action without any leniency.

The government reaffirmed that maintaining adequate fuel supply and protecting consumers from price shocks remain key priorities. Officials briefed the meeting that petroleum stocks are currently sufficient to meet national demand, with systems in place to continuously monitor supply and distribution.

The prime minister also highlighted recent relief measures aimed at easing the financial burden on citizens, particularly low-income groups. He noted that the government has already provided significant relief by implementing austerity measures and reducing development expenditures to avoid increases in fuel prices.

Authorities have been instructed to finalize further proposals in coordination with provincial governments to extend targeted support to vulnerable segments. The government aims to ensure that any policy decisions balance economic stability with public relief.

Officials informed the meeting that digital monitoring tools are being used to track petroleum demand, supply, and distribution in real time. These measures are intended to enhance transparency and efficiency across the supply chain.
