Pakistan, Afghan Taliban resume talks in China

Diplomatic talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have resumed in China as Beijing steps in to facilitate a potential ceasefire following weeks of heightened cross-border tensions.

According to officials, representatives from both sides are currently meeting in Urumqi, a city in northern China. The discussions are being held at the director-general level, involving senior officials from Pakistan’s Foreign Office along with military and intelligence representatives. The Afghan delegation includes members from the interior and foreign ministries, as well as officials from the Afghan intelligence apparatus.

China is mediating the dialogue with the aim of helping both sides reach a durable ceasefire and reduce ongoing hostilities. However, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has neither confirmed nor denied the latest round of talks.

Relations between Islamabad and Kabul have remained strained since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Afghan administration to take action against militant groups operating from Afghan territory, particularly those linked to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). These concerns have been a major point of contention in bilateral relations.

Tensions escalated further after cross-border incidents led to military responses, including a recent operation launched by Pakistan in late February following reported hostilities from the Afghan side. A temporary pause in operations was observed during Eidul Fitr in March, amid regional and international calls for de-escalation.

Efforts by countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye have also contributed to pauses in hostilities, as regional stakeholders continue to push for a peaceful resolution. The current talks are seen as a continuation of those diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation and preventing further escalation along the border.
