Pakistan has confirmed that it is engaged in ongoing negotiations with the Afghan Taliban in China, aiming to address rising security concerns and curb cross-border terrorism.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the talks are taking place in the Chinese city of Urumqi, where senior officials from both sides are holding discussions. He stated that Pakistan’s key demand is clear action from the Taliban government against militant groups operating from Afghan soil.
He emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to dialogue and has consistently supported diplomatic engagement to resolve tensions. The Pakistani delegation is still present in China, continuing discussions with Afghan officials and Chinese counterparts.
The development comes amid strained relations between the two neighboring countries since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Islamabad has repeatedly raised concerns over increased militant activity affecting its border regions.
The spokesperson also highlighted Pakistan’s growing diplomatic coordination with China on regional stability. He referred to Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent visit to Beijing, during which both countries discussed broader peace efforts.
Pakistan and China have jointly proposed a five-point plan to reduce tensions in the Middle East. The proposal includes an immediate ceasefire, diplomatic engagement, and restoring normal shipping activity through key routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
China has expressed strong support for Pakistan’s role, describing both countries as strategic partners working closely on regional peace initiatives.
Meanwhile, developments in the Gulf region were also discussed. Iran recently allowed additional Pakistani ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a move Pakistan described as a positive sign for regional stability.
On the diplomatic front, Islamabad has been actively engaging with key countries. A recent meeting of foreign ministers from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt focused on reducing tensions between Iran and the United States.
During the meeting, all sides stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the only way forward. They also called for respect for sovereignty and adherence to international law.
Pakistan has also offered to host potential talks between Iran and the United States. Officials say both sides have shown confidence in Pakistan’s role as a neutral facilitator.
In addition to multilateral efforts, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has held several phone calls with counterparts from countries including Iran, Egypt, Qatar, and Indonesia. These discussions focused on easing regional tensions and promoting peaceful solutions.
The Foreign Office also addressed misinformation circulating about Pakistan’s diplomatic role. Officials warned against fake news and clarified that some statements attributed to foreign governments had been misrepresented.
Reaffirming its broader stance, Pakistan also joined several countries in condemning restrictions on religious freedoms in Jerusalem, calling for respect for the rights of all communities.
