Health Ministry rejects claims of rising AIDS cases in Islamabad

The Ministry of National Health has issued a clarification regarding media reports about AIDS cases in Islamabad stating that the news claiming a dangerous increase in cases is not correct.

According to the Ministry of Health, there is no evidence of an epidemic situation of AIDS in Islamabad. The monthly number of HIV cases in the capital remains within normal limits and minor fluctuations in monthly cases are considered routine.

The Ministry further stated that awareness about HIV/AIDS among citizens is increasing which is leading more people to undergo screening. As screening increases, more cases are reported therefore, an increase in HIV/AIDS cases does not necessarily indicate an epidemic situation.

The Ministry of Health said that 618 registered patients are recorded at PIMS, Polyclinic and the AIDS Centre out of which 210 belong to Islamabad. It is incorrect to attribute all 618 cases solely to Islamabad.

The clarification added that HIV cases are more commonly confirmed among individuals involved in drug use and other high-risk or unethical activities. Higher case registration does not itself prove disease spread. Early diagnosis and treatment facilities for AIDS are considered a positive step.
