Unusual posting: ECP converts DG’s post temporarily into Special Secretary for ‘blue-eyed’

CEC approves Special Secretary position to remain valid only during tenure of current officer: Notification of fresh posting issued: Similar one-time upgrade made earlier in law division

The Election Commission of Pakistan has once again upgraded a senior post, converting the Director General (DG) Political Finance position into Special Secretary Political Finance, it was reported on Thursday.

According to the TV channel report, the move was approved by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), and a formal notification has been issued.

The report said the newly created Special Secretary position will remain in place only during the tenure of the current officer, Masood Sherwani. Once he leaves the post, it will revert to its original director-general status.

As per the channel report, this is not the first such change within the commission on which the eyebrows of bureaucrats are raised. Earlier, the Director General Law position was also upgraded to a special secretary role on a one-time basis for Muhammad Arshad.

It is noted that both officers had been part of the scrutiny committee in a political funding case involving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Officials familiar with the matter said several key positions within the commission are already held by retired officers, including the secretary and three special secretaries.
