Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz marked International Labour Day with a message highlighting the importance of workers in strengthening the economy and national development.

She said labourers form the backbone of progress, adding that their hard work plays a key role in economic stability. She also paid tribute to working women, noting their contribution in supporting households and society.

The chief minister stressed the need for fair wages, safe working environments, and better access to healthcare and education for workers’ families. She said the provincial government is committed to improving living standards for the labour class.

She outlined several welfare initiatives already underway in Punjab, including ration support and financial assistance schemes benefiting more than 1.4 million workers. Under these programs, eligible workers receive a monthly subsidy of Rs3,000.

Maryam Nawaz also said free medical treatment is being provided through social security hospitals and dispensaries, where thousands of workers benefit daily. Housing projects are also being expanded to help workers become homeowners.

According to her, 750 flats have already been allocated to labourers, while 1,872 additional flats are planned in the next phase. A workers’ bachelor hostel with 700 beds is also under construction at Quaid-e-Azam Business Park in Sheikhupura.

She further announced the establishment of teleclinics and vigilance centres for workers, along with a new Occupational Safety and Health Management Centre at Nawaz Sharif Social Security Teaching Hospital.

In addition, marriage grants for workers have been increased from Rs400,000 to Rs600,000, while death grants have been raised to Rs1 million. She also announced the creation of “Gosha-e-Mazdoor” in Lahore, a dedicated facility to provide rest and shelter for workers.
