More than 1,000 passengers are currently stuck on a UK-operated cruise ship docked in Bordeaux, France. Authorities have stopped passengers from disembarking after a gastrointestinal illness spread onboard.
The Ambition is carrying over 1,100 guests and more than 500 crew members. Health officials say dozens of people have reported symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
So far, at least 49 passengers and one crew member have shown signs of illness. Three passengers have been isolated inside their cabins to prevent further spread.
Medical teams have been sent onboard the ship. Samples have been collected and sent to Bordeaux University Hospital for testing. Results are expected within a few hours.
French regional health authorities said disembarkation has been suspended as a precaution. They said gastrointestinal infections can spread quickly in closed environments like cruise ships.
The ship is operated by Ambassador Cruise Line. The company said enhanced cleaning and strict hygiene measures have been introduced across the vessel.
Cleaning of public areas has been increased. Passengers have also been advised to follow strict hand hygiene rules. Medical staff onboard are monitoring new cases closely.
Officials also confirmed that a 92-year-old passenger died during the voyage. However, they said the cause of death is not linked yet to the outbreak and remains under investigation.
The ship had left Belfast on May 8 and stopped at Liverpool the next day. Authorities said a rise in illness cases was noticed after passengers boarded in Liverpool.
Health experts say gastrointestinal illness is common on cruise ships. It is often caused by norovirus or contaminated food. Symptoms usually include vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps.
Officials have said there is no evidence linking this outbreak to other viral incidents reported on different ships. Testing is still ongoing to confirm the exact cause.
Passengers remain onboard under restricted movement. Authorities will decide on further action once laboratory results are received and the situation is fully assessed.
