A first-of-its-kind open-air badminton championship has commenced in Karachi under the supervision of an international badminton body, marking a new initiative aimed at promoting the sport at the grassroots level.
The event was inaugurated by Sindh Sports Secretary Munawar Ali Mahesar, who formally opened the two-day competition in the city.
Organisers said the new format has been introduced to make badminton more accessible and popular among young players and spectators.
The open-air setting is being seen as an experimental step to broaden the sport’s appeal beyond traditional indoor venues.
A total of sixty-four players are participating in the championship, which will continue over two days of competitive matches.
Officials expressed hope that such initiatives would help encourage greater participation in badminton and strengthen the sporting culture in the province.
