Shai Hope’s masterclass guides West Indies to 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka

West Indies captain Shai Hope delivered a composed and unbeaten half-century as the Caribbean side secured a convincing seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka national cricket team in the opening T20I at Sabina Park, Kingston, taking a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

Chasing a target of 148, the West Indies reached the total comfortably in 19.2 overs, losing just three wickets in a controlled and confident batting display that reflected both discipline and intent.

Sri Lanka, after opting to bat first, managed 147 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite a fighting knock from Kamindu Mendis, the visitors were unable to build sustained partnerships as West Indies bowlers kept tight control throughout the innings.

Kamindu top-scored with a well-crafted 51 off 39 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes. However, his innings ended in unfortunate fashion when he was run out, with Hope himself involved in a sharp fielding effort that shifted momentum further toward the hosts.

Sri Lanka’s batting effort also saw contributions from captain Kusal Mendis, who struck a quick 36 off 23 deliveries, and Dasun Shanaka, who added 22 off 23 balls. However, regular breakthroughs prevented any late acceleration.

The West Indies bowling attack was led by Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph, both of whom claimed three wickets each, applying consistent pressure on the Sri Lankan batting lineup. Roston Chase also chipped in with a valuable wicket to restrict the visitors below a competitive total.

In reply, West Indies started aggressively with Brandon King setting the tone, smashing 37 off just 22 balls, including three towering sixes. His early assault gave the hosts immediate control of the chase.

Shimron Hetmyer added a quickfire 17 off nine deliveries, while Roston Chase and Rovman Powell contributed useful cameos to keep the scoreboard moving at a healthy rate.

However, the chase was anchored by Hope, who once again showcased his reputation for calm under pressure. His unbeaten 65 off 54 balls, featuring five boundaries and two sixes, ensured there were no late stumbles as West Indies cruised home.

Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga picked up two wickets, while Eshan Malinga added one, but the total was never enough to threaten the home side’s momentum.

With this dominant win, West Indies take early control of the series and send a strong message ahead of the remaining matches.
