Opposition seeks Punjab Assembly session over law and order

Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Moinuddin Riaz Qureshi has submitted a requisition to convene an urgent session of the provincial assembly over the law and order situation, crimes against women, prison conditions and the treatment of PTI founder Imran Khan in jail.

The requisition was submitted by Moinuddin Riaz, Sheikh Imtiaz, Rana Shahbaz and Farrukh Javed Moon.

The opposition said the assembly should immediately debate the worsening law and order situation in Punjab, including rape, harassment, kidnapping, murder, robbery and street crime.

The requisition said increasing crimes against women had created fear among citizens and accused the provincial government of failing to protect people’s lives and property.

It said the recent incident involving a foreign woman had damaged the reputation of Punjab and the country.

Moinuddin Riaz said Punjab’s prisons required urgent attention, adding that prisoners were being denied basic facilities, proper medical care and conditions consistent with human dignity.

He said allegations of mistreatment of political workers, especially women workers, in prisons were a matter of serious concern.

The opposition leader also raised concerns over the health of PTI founder Imran Khan, his treatment in prison, meetings with his family, access to personal doctors and medical care.

He said Imran Khan should be provided facilities and treatment in accordance with the law, prison rules, court orders and basic human rights.

The requisition also demanded a full and independent investigation into the mysterious deaths of PTI workers after their release from prison, alleged torture, mental and physical pressure and mistreatment during detention.

Moinuddin Riaz said an immediate assembly session was necessary so the House could play its constitutional role, hold the government accountable, identify those responsible and recommend corrective measures.
