Senate resolution seeks withdrawal of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

ISLAMABAD: A resolution has been submitted in the Senate condemning the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and demanding its immediate withdrawal, declaring the move contrary to constitutional requirements.

The resolution, submitted by Senator Kamran Murtaza, strongly condemned the imposition of the emergency and raised questions about the constitutional grounds for the decision.

It emphasized the importance of provincial autonomy and the protection of fundamental rights, stating that the emergency conflicted with constitutional requirements.

The resolution demanded that the federal government present the reasons for imposing the emergency, along with all relevant records, before Parliament.

It also questioned whether the constitutional prerequisites for the president to impose an emergency on the prime minister’s advice had been fulfilled.

According to the resolution, the president lacked the requisite constitutional satisfaction at the time the emergency was imposed.

The resolution called upon the president and the federal government to withdraw the decision immediately and declare the emergency order unconstitutional.

It stressed the need to safeguard provincial autonomy and protect the fundamental rights of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The resolution further recommended that, upon its approval by the Senate, copies be forwarded to the President, Prime Minister and Federal Law Minister.
