Farmers in Rahim Yar Khan are worried because despite the fact that sugarcane crop is ready but sugar mills have yet to start crushing, it was reported on Wednesday.
Kissan Ittehad Pakistan Tehsil President Munnawar Saleem has said that there are seven sugar mills in the district, but they have not started crushing as yet despite the fact that November 15 has passed. “This delay has made farmers extremely perturbed,” he has said, and added that delay in crushing will result in reduction in the weight of canes.
Things became complicated once the mills’ owners were granted ‘stay’ by the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Farmers, on the other hand, say that selling the crop at a price of Rs400 per maund will cause them a loss.
They demand that they be paid at least Rs600 per maund.
Farmers have demanded the government to intervene immediately so that crushing could be started.
