Tensions flared in the capital on Tuesday during an anti-encroachment operation carried out by the Capital Development Authority (CDA). The situation turned violent after protesters clashed with officials and set two government vehicles on fire.
The operation was conducted in the Noor Pur Shahan area near Bari Imam. It targeted alleged illegal constructions following recent legal clearance for enforcement action.
Residents strongly resisted the drive. Protesters gathered at the site and began throwing stones at CDA staff and law enforcement personnel. The confrontation quickly escalated.
Police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. The situation became more serious as violence spread in the area. Additional police contingents were called in to restore order.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos during the clashes. Public and government property was damaged amid the unrest.
Officials confirmed that two CDA vehicles were torched by protesters. Security forces later secured the area after heavy deployment.
A CDA spokesperson said the operation was being carried out in accordance with the law. He added that action followed the withdrawal of a court stay order that had previously restricted enforcement in the area.
He further stated that resistance was faced from local occupants during the operation. Authorities maintained that the drive was part of ongoing efforts against illegal settlements and encroachments.
The incident comes amid long-standing disputes between civic authorities and residents of informal settlements in Islamabad. Such operations have frequently led to tensions over displacement and legal rights.
