Pakistan backs Libyan-led peace process at UN

Pakistan has once again expressed strong support for Libya’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, stressing that a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process remains the only viable path toward lasting peace and stability.

The statement was made by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a United Nations Security Council briefing on the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

He described Libya as a “brotherly country” and reaffirmed Pakistan’s consistent backing for its independence and national unity. He said Pakistan fully supports efforts aimed at strengthening Libya’s political transition through inclusive dialogue.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar welcomed recent political and security developments in Libya. However, he cautioned that major challenges still persist, especially in achieving consensus on electoral frameworks and national political arrangements.

He emphasized that external solutions cannot bring lasting stability. Only a Libyan-owned process, driven by Libyan stakeholders themselves, can ensure durable peace.

Pakistan also expressed support for the ongoing work of UNSMIL. It appreciated efforts to facilitate structured dialogue among Libyan institutions and reduce internal divisions.

On the security situation, Pakistan noted relative calm in and around Tripoli. It urged continued cooperation among Libyan factions to advance security sector reforms. It also called for unifying military institutions to strengthen national stability.

The ambassador highlighted positive developments in Libya’s judicial and economic sectors. He pointed to steps taken by Libyan authorities to preserve judicial unity. He also welcomed progress on a unified national spending framework, describing it as an important step toward long-term economic stability.

On international sanctions, Pakistan clarified that such measures, particularly asset freezes, are not intended to punish Libya. Instead, they are meant to protect the country’s resources until they can be used for the benefit of its people.
