President, PM pay tribute to workers on Labour Day, reaffirm commitment to rights and welfare

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to workers across Pakistan and the world on International Labour Day, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding labour rights, ensuring fair wages and promoting dignified working conditions.

In his message, President Zardari said the day commemorates the historic struggle of workers who sacrificed their lives for fundamental rights, including fair wages and reasonable working hours. Recalling the 140-year-old Haymarket Affair, he highlighted the demand for “eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for personal life” as a defining principle of human dignity.

The president noted that the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 guarantees protection against exploitation and obligates the State to uphold equitable economic principles. He praised the contribution of workers across sectors, from agriculture to industry, calling them a driving force behind national development.

He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to international labour standards, including fair wages, social protection, elimination of forced and child labour, and non-discrimination, in line with conventions of the International Labour Organization.

Highlighting the role of overseas Pakistanis, the president said millions of workers abroad contribute significantly through remittances while representing the country with professionalism. He stressed that ensuring safe working conditions, equal opportunities and adequate wages remains a national priority, alongside investment in human capital, vocational training, women’s participation and youth employment.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan joins the global community in observing Labour Day with renewed resolve, acknowledging the vital role of workers in sustaining the country’s economic and social systems. He described labourers, farmers, artisans, factory workers and professionals as the backbone of society.

The prime minister emphasized the government’s focus on skill development, noting that initiatives under the National Skills Development Policy aim to equip workers with internationally recognized training, language proficiency and certification to enhance employment opportunities, particularly abroad.

He said institutions such as the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution and the Workers Welfare Fund are continuing efforts to provide pensions, housing, education and other essential services to workers and their families.

Calling for collective responsibility, the prime minister urged federal and provincial governments, the business community and industrialists to uphold workers’ rights and dignity, ensuring fair treatment and improved working conditions.

“Let us renew our commitment to honour and protect those who drive our progress,” he said, expressing confidence that Pakistan’s workforce will continue to excel globally through skill, dedication and resilience.
