Wheat, flour prices surge amid alleged hoarding crisis

The wheat and flour crisis in Lahore is intensifying despite the ongoing wheat harvesting and grinding season, with flour prices witnessing a sharp increase amid allegations of hoarding and market manipulation.

According to market sources, wheat prices in Lahore have climbed to Rs3,850 per maund, significantly higher than the official government rate of Rs3,500 per maund. Traders and consumers say wheat is not available at the officially notified price due to the alleged involvement of hoarders and market mafias.

The shortage of wheat at controlled rates has started pushing flour prices upward across the city, creating concern among consumers already burdened by rising inflation.

Sources said flour mill owners have fixed the ex-mill price of a 10-kilogram flour bag at Rs990, while the same bag is being sold for more than Rs1,080 in the open market.

Similarly, a 15-kilogram flour bag has been priced at Rs1,600, while the ex-mill rate for a 20-kilogram flour bag has reached Rs2,225. In retail markets, the price of a 20-kilogram bag has crossed Rs2,300.

Market data shows that within nearly one and a half months, the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag has surged from Rs1,810 to over Rs2,300, reflecting a steep increase in essential food costs.

Consumers have expressed concern over the rapid rise in flour prices despite reports of abundant wheat production this season. Citizens have urged the authorities to take immediate action against hoarding and ensure the availability of wheat and flour at official rates.

Traders and industry sources believe that unless strict action is taken against hoarders and supply chain manipulation, prices may continue to rise in the coming weeks, further affecting household budgets across Punjab.
