Rangers and SIU kill extortionist during joint operation in Karachi

A joint operation conducted by the Sindh Rangers and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Karachi has targeted members of a suspected extortion network linked to the so-called Jameel Chhanga gang, it was reported on Thursday.

According to a Rangers spokesperson, the operation was carried out in the Nazimabad and Gulbahar areas following intelligence reports. During the raid, the suspects reportedly opened fire on law enforcement personnel, prompting a retaliatory response.

As a result of the exchange of fire, one most-wanted suspect, identified as Sikandar alias Babar Kalia, was killed on the spot, while another suspect, Asad alias Lolo, was injured and taken into custody. A third suspect, Zohaib alias Shah Sahib, was arrested in possession of weapons and ammunition. Officials said recovered items included firearms and ammunition used during the operation.

According to the spokesperson, the killed suspect was a repeat offender with a long criminal history. He had previously been arrested and injured in an encounter with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). He was allegedly involved in multiple cases of extortion, intimidation and armed attacks dating back to 2018.

Authorities further stated that the suspect had recently carried out a firing incident in Nazimabad after extortion demands were not met, targeting local businesses including a fast-food outlet and a commercial building. CCTV footage of the incident had surfaced, after which he reportedly went into hiding in interior Sindh before returning to Karachi to resume extortion activities.

The injured suspect is also believed to have been involved in extortion operations and has previously been arrested by SIU police. The third arrested individual is accused of drug-related activities and providing safe houses to members of the criminal network.

Security officials confirmed that further operations are underway to apprehend other members of the gang.
