Activists allege abuse after Israel seizes Gaza aid Flotilla for 52 hours

TEL AVIV / INTERNATIONAL WATERS: Activists aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla have alleged they were held for more than 52 hours under harsh conditions after being intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters, according to statements cited by international media.

The activists said they were part of the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” a civilian maritime mission consisting of more than 50 boats that set sail from Türkiye with the aim of breaking the blockade on Gaza and delivering symbolic humanitarian aid. The mission was also intended as a peaceful protest against the ongoing crisis in the region.

According to one activist’s account shared with media outlets, Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla near Cyprus and detained more than 400 participants, transferring them onto a military vessel that was later described by detainees as a “temporary holding facility at sea.”

The activist alleged that during detention, participants were subjected to physical force, including beatings, the use of stun devices, rubber bullets, and stun grenades. They further claimed that injured detainees were not provided adequate medical assistance during the operation.

Reports also state that after being brought to Israel’s Ashdod port, some activists were later moved to a detention facility in southern Israel, where they faced continued restrictions, limited access to basic amenities, and what they described as harsh confinement conditions.

The activist added that the experience profoundly impacted them, saying it gave them a deeper understanding of the suffering faced by Palestinian detainees and civilians in Gaza — the very people they had set out to support through the mission.

International broadcaster Al Jazeera reported that it had sought a response from Israeli authorities regarding the allegations, but no official comment had been received at the time of publication.

The incident has added further attention to ongoing debates surrounding maritime blockades, humanitarian access, and civilian activism in conflict zones, with rights groups continuing to call for transparency and independent investigations into such detentions.

As tensions remain high in the region, the flotilla episode is emerging as another flashpoint in the broader political and humanitarian discourse surrounding Gaza.
