Switzerland has confirmed that a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran is scheduled to be signed on Friday, June 19, at the Bürgenstock resort in central Switzerland. The Swiss Foreign Ministry said it has been in continuous contact with the US, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar regarding the arrangements for the signing ceremony. Officials added that the venue was proposed jointly by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, as well as by both negotiating sides, the United States and Iran. Switzerland said it is only acting as a facilitator and is providing neutral ground and logistical support for the process. The ministry also stated that no details of the agreement or the ceremony have been released so far.
US President Donald Trump, speaking at the G7 summit in France, said the memorandum clearly states that Iran will not be allowed to develop or possess nuclear weapons. He said the agreement would be released publicly and may also be sent to the US Congress for review. Trump added that the process is entering a second phase of negotiations with a relatively short timeline. He suggested that talks could move quickly, depending on cooperation between both sides. He also said that the United States will not be providing financial assistance to Iran under this framework.
Trump also commented on wider regional tensions during the summit. He said Israeli leadership should act more responsibly regarding Lebanon. He also said he had told Israel he did not approve of recent strikes in Beirut. At the same time, he denied any strain in relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said their relationship remains strong. He added that the Iran deal is focused mainly on preventing nuclear weapons and is not linked to regime change policies.
Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani welcomed the development and said the US–Iran understanding could bring positive outcomes for the Middle East. Qatari officials said the agreement may help reduce regional tensions and improve stability. They also said it could support broader cooperation on energy flows, including liquefied natural gas exports through key routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar confirmed it will be represented at the signing ceremony in Switzerland.
Officials in Qatar also highlighted the role of Pakistan and Qatar in facilitating the mediation process between the United States and Iran. They said both countries have supported dialogue and helped bring the parties closer to agreement.
