Pakistan pushes EV manufacturing, localisation drive

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to promoting electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, localisation, and related industrial development as part of efforts to modernise the country’s automotive sector.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a meeting with a delegation from BYD Group and Mega Motor Company (MMC), where both sides discussed investment plans, local production, and future expansion of EV technology in Pakistan.

According to an official statement, the BYD delegation was led by senior executives responsible for Asia-Pacific operations, along with the Chief Executive Officer of Mega Motor Company. The minister welcomed the delegation and appreciated the company’s growing presence in Pakistan.

Aurangzeb said Pakistan is prioritising technology-driven foreign investment and stressed that joint ventures like BYD-MMC can contribute to industrial growth, job creation, export potential, and technology transfer.

The BYD representatives briefed the minister on their ongoing operations and future plans in Pakistan. They confirmed that construction of a local manufacturing facility is progressing as scheduled.

They also outlined plans to expand their product range, introduce advanced EV technologies, and strengthen Pakistan’s electric vehicle ecosystem through investment and capacity building.

The delegation highlighted Pakistan’s potential as an emerging market for new energy vehicles and expressed interest in positioning the country as a regional hub for EV manufacturing and exports.

Discussions also included the development of charging infrastructure in collaboration with local partners. The company emphasized the importance of training Pakistani engineers and technicians to support long-term sector growth.

Officials noted that Pakistan’s role in global automotive transition is expected to grow as demand for electric and hybrid vehicles increases worldwide.

The finance minister said global trends clearly indicate a shift toward electric mobility. He reaffirmed the government’s support for policies that encourage sustainable transport, energy efficiency, and industrial modernization.

He further encouraged the delegation to accelerate efforts in local assembly, manufacturing, and charging infrastructure development to support faster adoption of EVs in the country.

Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation in technology transfer, skills development, and sustainable transportation solutions.
