Australia urges de-escalation as US-Iran conflict raises global concerns
Australia has called for a reduction in tensions and a return to stability amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government has consistently supported efforts toward de-escalation and a ceasefire, highlighting the impact of the conflict on Australians and global energy markets.
Speaking in an interview, Wong said rising tensions had affected economies around the world and that restoring stability remained a priority.
She said the situation had been concerning for some time, adding that the weakening of the ceasefire was a matter of concern for countries affected by the conflict.
Wong said Australia wanted to see negotiations continue and called for Iran to take steps toward restoring stability in the region.
She also referred to concerns regarding Iran’s actions, saying Australia remained aware of security risks linked to the Iranian government. She noted that Australia had previously taken measures, including asking Iran’s ambassador to leave and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.
The foreign minister said the conflict had disrupted global markets and affected Australians through higher costs. She added that the Australian government was working to secure fuel supplies, maintain imports, and diversify supply chains.
Wong said developments around the Strait of Hormuz remained a major concern, as disruptions in the region continue to affect global energy markets and economies.
