Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has inaugurated green electric buses project in five districts of the province on Thursday.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said green electric buses launched in Layyah, Chiniot, Sialkot, Okara and Murree.
Maryam Nawaz said the target is to run 5,000 electric buses in Punjab in five years.
Green buses started running in all small and big cities of Punjab. She said according to the need of 148 tehsil government will provide, Maryam Nawaz Sharif said.
She appreciated the efforts of Transport Department and the concern authorities.
In this year 1100 buses will be provided this year and our target is to provide 1500 state-of-art and airconditioned green electric buses next year.
The people including students and women will get befit of these green electric buses with low fare and environment friendly, Maryam Nawaz said.
She said after districts, the green buses will be provided at tehsil level soon.
Maryam Nawaz directed deputy commissioners to monitor the construction and renovation of electric bus stands.
She ordered deputy and assistant commissioners to take immediate steps to address the problems faced by electric buses.
Launching electric buses in Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Chiniot and Murree is a source of joy and gratitude for me, Maryam Nawaz said.
I also congratulate the assembly members of Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Chiniot and Murree on the launch of electric buses, Maryam Nawaz said.
She said not only Punjab, but also the largest public transport system in the history of Pakistan is going to be established.
In two and a half years, the electric bus project has received the certificate of popular acceptance, Maryam Nawaz said.
She said people of remote and backward districts are also enjoying travel in the latest electric buses.
Maryam Nawaz said electrobuses are reaching every tehsil of Punjab without distinguishing between rural and urban areas.
Electrobuses are the biggest public mega project costing a total of Rs200 billion, Maryam Nawaz said.
She said air-conditioned electric buses are no less than a blessing in the summer season.
Students, women and senior citizens are traveling free on electric buses, Maryam Nawaz said.
She said buses will be operated in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Multan, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana and Narowal by the end of July.

According to briefing, 51 electric buses will be operated on 10 routes in Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Chiniot and Murree.
Another 101 buses will be operated in nine districts of Punjab by the end of July.
Electrobuses will operate from General Bus Stand in Layyah to Paharpur and Tehsil Hospital.
As many as 10 electrobuses in Chiniot will travel from Tehsil Chowk to Bhuwana to Lalian.
In Okara, Sahiwal Bypass to KFC Bypass and General Bus Stand to Shergarh via Akhtarabad.
Electrobuses will travel from General Bus Stand to Daska and back in Sialkot.
In Murree, electrobuses will operate from General Bus Stand to Kotli Satian and up to 17 miles.
As many as 500 electric buses are being operated in 24 districts of Punjab.
