The 22-year-old Pakistani female boxer Fatima Zahra has secured the country’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games after defeating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson 5-0 in the women’s 60kg quarterfinal.
Fatima dominated the bout, winning 29-28 on four judges scorecards and 30-27 on the fifth to book her place in the semifinals and guarantee at least a bronze medal.
She will face Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh in Friday’s semifinal with a place in the gold medal bout at stake.
After her landmark victory the boxer said that, “This is our first step, we are hoping for gold as well.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Qudratullah lost to Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in the men’s 60kg bout, while Mohammad Ismail finished 41st among 46 runners in the 400m heats and swimmer Hamza Asif placed 46th out of 70 competitors in the men’s 50m butterfly heat missing out his place in the semi-finals.
