Pakistan sees 1.6 million jump in tax returns, but collection falls

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received more than 7.55 million income tax returns so far in the current fiscal year, while tax collection from these returns has reached Rs100.605 billion, according to official documents.

The figures show a significant increase in the number of tax returns filed compared with the corresponding period last year. However, the total tax collected has declined despite the rise in filings.

According to the documents, 7,556,387 income tax returns have been submitted so far this fiscal year, compared with 5,942,175 during the same period last year. This represents an increase of more than 1.614 million returns.

Despite the higher number of filings, tax collection has fallen by Rs11.58 billion compared with the previous year.

The documents further reveal that non-salaried individuals accounted for the largest share of tax returns. A total of 5,069,378 returns were filed by non-salaried taxpayers, compared with 3.676 million during the corresponding period last year.

Meanwhile, the number of returns filed by salaried individuals reached 2,372,814. The approved tax liability of the salaried class was recorded at Rs9.5184 billion.

The number of tax returns filed by companies, however, declined during the period. Corporate filings fell from 18,051 last year to 15,243 in the current fiscal year.

Similarly, 98,952 returns were submitted by associations of persons, compared with 91,766 during the same period last year.

The documents also highlighted progress under the government’s scheme for small retailers. A total of 3,295 registrations have been completed under the initiative.

Of these, 2,811 retailers registered through the online portal, while the remaining 484 completed their registrations through the mobile application.

The figures indicate a substantial increase in individual tax filings, particularly among non-salaried taxpayers, although the decline in overall tax collection remains a key concern.
