Weekly inflation rises as food and fuel prices climb

Pakistan’s short-term inflation rose slightly during the past week, according to fresh data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

The Sensitive Price Indicator, which tracks the cost of everyday essentials, increased by 0.09 percent weekly.

The bureau said prices of 12 essential items increased during the past week, while 13 items became cheaper, and prices of 26 commodities remained unchanged.

Among the key contributors to the rise, tomato prices surged by 12.78 percent, and bananas rose by 8.16 percent over the week.

Onion prices increased by 7.2 percent, ginger by 5.45 percent, and diesel by 4.35 percent.

Prices of pulses also showed an upward trend, with mash daal rising by 2.3 percent and moong daal by 0.35 percent.

Mustard oil and mutton were also reported to have become more expensive during the week, the PBS said.

On the other hand, some relief was recorded in staple food items.

Wheat flour prices fell by 2.89 percent, egg prices declined by 2.86 percent, while masoor daal became cheaper by 1.26 percent during the same period.
