Revolution on wheels: 1,100 electric taxis hit Punjab streets today

For the first time in Pakistan, the Punjab government is rolling out an E-Taxi Scheme, aimed at promoting electric vehicles and eco-friendly urban transport. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will inaugurate the initiative today, introducing 1,100 electric vehicles in its first phase.

The scheme reserves 30% of vehicles for women, with female-driven e-taxis featuring a distinct color for easy identification. To support drivers, the government will cover 50% of the down payment for men and 60% for women, along with fees for vehicle registration, fitness tests, and token taxes. The remaining amount can be paid through five-year easy installments.

Officials confirmed that the e-taxis will be registered with popular ride-hailing platforms such as inDrive and Yango. To ensure the safety of passengers and drivers, each vehicle will be equipped with a panic button linked to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority.

The initiative also plans to install fast-charging stations at public locations and enable digital payment facilities, making the service convenient and modern for users
