PMD forecasts widespread rain, thunderstorms and hail across Pakistan in next 24 hours

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a fresh spell of unsettled weather across much of the country over the next 24 hours, with rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms expected in several regions. Isolated heavy downpours and hailstorms may also occur, raising concerns about potential damage and localised flooding.

According to the latest weather outlook, widespread rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is likely in Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Other areas, including Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, are expected to experience scattered rain and thunderstorm activity, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours.

The Met Office has warned that intense rainfall could trigger flash flooding in parts of northeastern Balochistan, especially in districts such as Zhob, Musakhel and Dera Bugti. Hill torrents are also anticipated in Dera Ghazi Khan, while local streams in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may swell due to heavy showers.

Authorities have expressed concern over the potential impact of strong winds, lightning and hailstorms, which could damage vulnerable structures including electricity poles, billboards and solar installations. Agricultural areas may also face losses, as standing crops in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remain exposed to harsh weather conditions.

In the federal capital Islamabad, partly cloudy skies are expected, with a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms later in the day.

Regionally, southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to receive widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy falls and hailstorms. Northern parts of the province may also witness snowfall over higher elevations.

Punjab is expected to see more pronounced activity in its southern belt, including Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan, while central and northern cities such as Lahore and Rawalpindi could experience scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds.

In Sindh, intermittent rain and thunderstorms are forecast in major urban centres like Karachi and Hyderabad, with the possibility of heavier spells and hailstorms in southern districts.

Balochistan is set to experience widespread intermittent rain across most districts, with northeastern areas at higher risk of heavy to very heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are likely to remain cloudy, with isolated rain and thunderstorms and snowfall over mountainous terrain during the evening and night.
