India beat Pakistan 5-3 in thrilling hockey World Cup clash, reach second round

India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 5-3 in a thrilling, high-scoring encounter at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 in the Netherlands on Wednesday, securing their place in the second round of the tournament.

India captain Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek scored two goals each, while Hardik Singh added another through a penalty stroke. Pakistan’s Hannan Shahid also scored twice, with Sufyan Khan contributing the other goal.

India made a flying start and took the lead in the fifth minute when Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner with a powerful low drag-flick.

Abhishek doubled India’s advantage in the 11th minute after his effort took a deflection off a Pakistan defender before finding the net.

India continued to dominate and Harmanpreet scored his second goal in the 21st minute, capitalising on a rebound following another penalty-corner opportunity to make it 3-0.

Pakistan responded immediately as Hannan Shahid scored in the 22nd minute after goalkeeper Suraj Karkera had made two saves in quick succession.

Abhishek restored India’s three-goal advantage two minutes later, finding the net after working his way into a crowded circle.

Pakistan remained in the contest when Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner in the 25th minute, reducing the deficit to 4-2 before half-time.

India extended their lead again five minutes into the third quarter. Aditya Arjun Lalage was brought down inside the circle, and Hardik Singh converted the resulting penalty stroke to make it 5-2.

Pakistan continued to fight and Hannan Shahid scored his second goal early in the final quarter following a counter-attack, bringing the score to 5-3.

India defended their advantage effectively during the remainder of the match to secure victory and advance to the second round.

Following the result, India moved into Pool E of the second round alongside England and the top two teams from Pool A. The top two teams from Pool E will qualify for the semi-finals.

England had earlier secured a top-two finish by defeating Wales 8-2 and ended the opening phase with nine points.

India Extend Dominance Over Pakistan

The defeat extended Pakistan’s winless run against India to 20 matches. India have won 18 and drawn two of those encounters since Pakistan’s last victory in the 2016 South Asian Games final.

The match was the first meeting between the two sides at a Hockey World Cup since 2010, when India defeated Pakistan 4-1 in New Delhi.

The Wagener Hockey Stadium also provided a historic backdrop to the rivalry. In 1973, India defeated Pakistan 1-0 at the same venue in the World Cup semi-final, with BP Govinda scoring the decisive goal.

Pakistan still lead the overall head-to-head record between the two teams, but India have enjoyed a dominant run in recent years.

India had also defeated Pakistan twice during the London leg of the FIH Pro League in June, winning 4-3 and 7-1.
