Islamabad court orders jail trial in barrier case against Imaan Mazari

ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad has issued a notification for the jail trial of human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, in a case related to the removal of barriers.

The notification was issued by the Ministry of Law, and the next hearing will take place at Adiala Jail, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Thursday.

The court directed lawyers and witnesses to appear at the jail for the next hearing. It adjourned the proceedings until Friday. The case against Mazari and Chattha was registered at Aabpara Police Station in Islamabad.

At the previous hearing on 10 October 2026, the anti-terrorism court disposed of a petition filed by the couple seeking the removal of terrorism-related sections from the case.

Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra said he could not hear the petition at that stage. He said he was not authorised to review his earlier decision.

The couple’s lawyers, Zainab Janjua and Aimal Khan, walked out of the courtroom and boycotted the proceedings. Imaan Mazari’s mother, Dr Shireen Mazari, also attended the hearing.

Advocate Zainab Janjua told the court that Bar President Naeem Ali Gujjar was unwell and that her senior colleague, Advocate Riasat Ali Azad, was at the hospital looking after him.

She also referred to a report from jail officials which, she said, stated that Islamabad Police were not providing security to escort Mazari and Chattha to court.

The lawyer argued that the state was asking prosecution witnesses to record their statements while, at the same time, failing to provide security for the accused to attend proceedings. She said the couple had been deprived of their right to a fair trial.
