Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has called for an international appeal for flood relief, urging immediate engagement with the United Nations.
According to details surfaced on Monday, during a visit to the flood-affected areas of Muzaffargarh, Bhutto-Zardari said that the federal and provincial governments cannot manage the disaster alone. He praised the constructive reporting on the flood situation in Punjab.
He said that significant delays have already occurred in addressing the crisis and emphasised that Pakistan’s friendly nations are willing to assist.
Bhutto-Zardari had also called for the waiving of debts and electricity bills for flood victims and demanded relief measures for the agricultural sector. He stated that compensation must be provided for the losses incurred by those affected, and an agricultural emergency should be declared in the country.
The PPP chairman urged the government to offer support to farmers through subsidies on seeds and fertiliser. He said the federal government must collaborate with the provincial administrations. He also called on the foreign minister to make a formal international appeal.
He said that farmers’ bills should be waived from the onset to the conclusion of the floods, and assistance should be extended to victims through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
