IHC rejects telecom companies pleas against Competition Commission

Throwing out seven petitions filed by telecom companies against the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) as inadmissible for hearing, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday ruled that the commission had the authority to carry out investigation in all sectors of the economy, and telecom was no exception, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Telecom companies namely Jazz, Telenor, Zong, Ufone, Warid and PTCL had filed the petitions.

The commission had issued show-cause notices to these companies for what it called misleading the consumers through their marketing.

In 2014, the companies had been granted ‘stay’ by a court.

In the show-cause notice, the CCP had pointed out excessive fees charged on pre-paid cards and had declared ‘unlimited internet packages’ offered by these companies misleading.

The court, in its judgement, said that the commission’s jurisdiction extended to all sectors of the economy. “Regulatory bodies too fall in the CCP’s jurisdiction,” the court observed.
