Maryam Nawaz Sharif has called for urgent and collective action to tackle climate change, stressing that expanding green cover remains one of the most effective ways to address environmental challenges.
In a message marking Earth Day, the Punjab chief minister urged citizens, institutions, and government departments to play an active role in protecting the environment. She emphasized that tree plantation, reducing plastic use, and promoting sustainable practices are essential steps toward mitigating the impact of climate change.
Highlighting policy priorities, she underscored the need to safeguard forests, cut carbon emissions, and transition toward a greener economy. She also acknowledged the contributions of individuals and organizations working to preserve natural ecosystems, noting that their efforts are vital for long-term sustainability.
The chief minister reiterated that the planet must be preserved not only for current populations but also as a trust for future generations. She stressed that unchecked pollution and environmental degradation pose serious risks, making it imperative to conserve natural resources and protect tree cover.
Referring to provincial initiatives, Maryam Nawaz said Punjab has introduced a zero-plastic waste policy and set up a “Smart Environment Force” to strengthen enforcement and environmental monitoring. She added that Earth Day serves as a reminder of the growing environmental threats and the need for immediate action.
She further revealed that work is underway on a comprehensive 10-year Climate Change Action Plan, alongside several large-scale projects aimed at improving environmental conditions across the province.
