The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a landslide alert for the country’s mountainous regions from June 2 to June 6, warning of increased risks due to ongoing rainfall and accelerated glacial melt.
According to the NDMA, the likelihood of landslides is expected to rise in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between June 2 and June 5. Areas identified as highly vulnerable include Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Haripur.
The authority has declared several major routes sensitive to landslides, including the Lowari Tunnel, the Chitral-Dir Road, the Swat Valley routes, the Karakoram Highway, and the Naran-Kaghan Road. Travellers and transport operators have been advised to exercise extreme caution while using these roads.
The NDMA also warned that the threat of landslides will persist in various parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from June 2 to June 6. Link roads connecting Shahi, Sharda, Athmuqam, and Urang Kel have been identified as particularly vulnerable to landslide-related disruptions.
Officials cautioned that rainfall in upper catchment areas may lead to localised flooding in rivers, streams, and canals, potentially causing road blockages and travel difficulties in affected regions.
The NDMA has urged tourists planning to visit northern areas to check weather forecasts and road conditions before undertaking any journey. The authority emphasised the importance of staying informed through official advisories and avoiding unnecessary travel in high-risk areas.
In view of the expected weather conditions, the NDMA has issued advance alerts to all relevant federal, provincial, and local agencies, directing them to remain vigilant, take precautionary measures to ensure public safety, and respond promptly to any emergencies.
