LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has welcomed the government’s diplomatic role in facilitating the recent ceasefire understanding between the United States and Iran, calling for immediate steps to translate the development into economic benefits for the people of Pakistan.
In a statement issued on Monday, Hafiz Naeem said Iran has acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in supporting dialogue between Washington and Tehran. He stressed that the next phase should focus on strengthening bilateral economic ties, including the completion of the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project and the restoration of free trade between the neighboring countries.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader also urged the government to pass on potential economic gains to the public by reducing petroleum prices and pursuing policies that would ease the financial burden on citizens. He emphasized the need for national unity, calling on political leaders and all provinces to work together in support of the country’s broader economic and strategic interests.
The statement comes as preparations continue for a landmark ceremony in Geneva, where the United States and Iran are expected to sign an initial memorandum of understanding on Friday. The agreement will serve as the foundation for a 60-day negotiation process covering Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and other key issues.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to attend the signing ceremony alongside a high-level Pakistani delegation, highlighting Islamabad’s interest in supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
