Senate subcommittee recommends reopening Mazar-e-Quaid to public

A subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on National Heritage has recommended reopening Mazar-e-Quaid to the public and called for improved security and management arrangements at the national monument.

The meeting was chaired by Senator Waqar Mehdi, who later briefed the media alongside Senator Bushra Anjum.

The committee announced that another meeting with the Mazar-e-Quaid Management Board would be held within the next 15 days to review progress on the recommendations.

Speaking to the media, Senator Waqar Mehdi said Mazar-e-Quaid is the face of Pakistan and its administration should be further improved.

He urged all relevant institutions to play their role in enhancing the facilities and management of the mausoleum.

He acknowledged that security concerns remain a key issue and noted that the mausoleum has remained closed to the general public for the past three to four years.

He expressed hope that it would soon be reopened after addressing security-related matters.

Senator Waqar Mehdi also announced that a committee had been constituted to examine security arrangements and recommend measures to facilitate public access while ensuring safety.

Senator Bushra Anjum said efforts were under way to further beautify Mazar-e-Quaid and appealed to the media to play a positive role in highlighting the importance of the national monument.

She also supported reopening the mausoleum to the public at the earliest.
