PCB confirms four-team ODI tournament ahead of new domestic season

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed that a four-team One-Day tournament will be held in August as part of its preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, marking the start of a renewed effort to identify and develop Pakistan’s strongest white-ball squad.

The tournament will take place before the start of the country’s first-class domestic season and will feature all leading white-ball cricketers in a competitive environment designed to help selectors and coaches assess talent, finalize player roles, and build a long-term ODI player pool.

Director of the High Performance Centre, Aaqib Javed, said Pakistan has around 18 months to prepare for the 2027 World Cup, making it the ideal time to begin structured planning for the global event.

“We have designed this tournament to create a strong pool of players before the World Cup. Selectors and coaches have worked together to ensure every player gets an opportunity in a role that reflects the team’s future requirements,” Aaqib said.

According to the former fast bowler, each of the four squads will be carefully assembled by selectors and coaching staff, with players assigned specific responsibilities. The tournament will allow the management to evaluate performances under match conditions and determine which group of players should form the core of Pakistan’s ODI plans.

One of the key features of the competition is that every match will be televised, ensuring complete transparency and allowing fans, analysts, and team management to closely monitor individual performances.

Aaqib believes the tournament will make the selection process more objective by providing consistent data and head-to-head competition among the country’s top white-ball players.

The PCB also hopes the event will raise the standard of domestic limited-overs cricket while giving emerging players the chance to impress alongside established international stars.

Speaking about Pakistan’s ambitions, Aaqib stressed that the national team’s ODI ranking must return to where it belongs.

“Pakistan should be among the top four ODI teams in the world. A ranking below that is simply not acceptable. We believe this process will help us make that leap,” he said.

The August tournament is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Pakistan’s roadmap towards the 2027 World Cup, with strong performances likely to influence future national team selections and long-term squad planning.
