KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon chaired a meeting in Karachi to review measures aimed at preventing the spread of fake, misleading and fabricated information across mainstream and social media platforms.
During the meeting, Memon said the Sindh government would not tolerate attempts to harm individuals or create unrest through false and misleading information. He stressed the need for an effective monitoring mechanism to identify and respond to fake news at an early stage.
The senior minister directed the Information Department to establish a dedicated monitoring system to track misleading content and identify fake news circulating on different media platforms. He said the department should monitor mainstream and social media on a daily basis and promptly flag information that could mislead the public or cause harm.
Memon said the provincial government would seek assistance from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to take action against individuals involved in creating and spreading fake news. He called for stronger coordination between the Sindh Information Department and the cybercrime investigation authorities to ensure timely action against those responsible for deliberately circulating false information.
He further emphasized that the government’s communication strategy should focus on promoting peace, tolerance, social harmony and national unity. According to him, the provincial government wants its public narrative to reflect these principles and discourage content that could create divisions among different segments of society.
Memon also directed officials to ensure representation of different sections of society in the government’s communication efforts. He said representatives of various communities and social groups should become part of the Sindh government’s narrative to promote inclusivity and strengthen public understanding.
The meeting also reviewed ways to improve monitoring, coordination and response mechanisms so that misleading information can be identified and addressed more effectively.
