Young doctors hold protest against hike in petroleum prices

Members of Young Doctors Association (YDA) of Pakistan at Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) held a protest demonstration against the recent increase in prices of petroleum products at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on Saturday.

During the protest, young doctors said that the prices of petroleum products have broken the backs of the patients and doctors.

Speaking to the media during the demonstration, YDA representatives lamented that the recent hike in petroleum product prices had “broken the backs” of the salaried class.

“We are standing at a crossroads where we don’t know whether to focus on treating our patients or worry about meeting our own basic household expenses,” a protesting resident doctor said. “The cost of commuting, food, and utilities has outpaced our earnings. For a junior doctor, surviving in the federal capital has become nearly impossible.”

They demanded government increase their basic salaries on a priority basis. The young doctors said that it has become impossible for the white class to survive in the storm of inflation.

The Young Doctors Association said that in case their demands were not met, they would expand their protest to other cities.
