Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered a province-wide crackdown on overcharging, overloading, and unsafe public transport ahead of the expected Eidul Azha travel rush, directing authorities to ensure strict enforcement of transport regulations.
Chairing a high-level review on public mobility arrangements, the chief minister instructed all deputy commissioners and district police officers across Punjab to intensify inspections at bus terminals, wagon stands, and major transit routes. She emphasized that no negligence would be tolerated in ensuring safe and affordable travel for citizens during the busy holiday period.
Under the new directives, transport operators found involved in charging fares above the approved rates will face immediate action. The chief minister ordered that official fare charts must be prominently displayed inside all public transport vehicles as well as at bus terminals to prevent passengers from being exploited during peak travel days.
She further directed that transport permits and terminal licenses of repeat offenders should be suspended or cancelled without delay. Vehicles lacking valid fitness certificates or found carrying passengers beyond capacity will be taken off the road, with law enforcement agencies asked to ensure strict compliance.
The chief minister also stressed the need to improve basic facilities for travelers, including the availability of clean drinking water at bus stands and waiting areas, particularly during hot weather and increased passenger load.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Transport Department has activated a dedicated complaint helpline (1071), encouraging citizens to report incidents of overcharging, overcrowding, or poor transport conditions so that immediate action can be taken against violators.
