Sindh braces for extreme heat as temperatures may hit 50°C

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for Sindh, warning that temperatures in several districts could soar up to 50 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

According to the weather department, a high-pressure system developing in the upper atmosphere is expected to intensify from Tuesday, triggering moderate to severe heatwave conditions across most parts of the province until May 31.

Authorities have urged the public, particularly children, women, and elderly citizens, to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun during peak hours. Farmers have also been advised to protect crops and livestock from the extreme weather.

Officials said temperatures in districts including Sukkur, Larkana, and Dadu could range between 47°C and 50°C. Meanwhile, areas such as Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, and Jamshoro are likely to experience temperatures between 44°C and 47°C.

The department also cautioned that electricity demand could rise sharply during the heatwave and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary power consumption.

In Karachi, temperatures are expected to remain between 34°C and 36°C on Monday and Tuesday, increasing slightly to 35°C to 37°C on Wednesday. Sea breezes from the southwest are expected to continue in the coastal city over the next two days.
