The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert, warning of a significant rise in water levels in the country’s major rivers until August 4, it was reported on Monday.
According to the NDMA, high level flooding has been recorded at Head Gogi on the Lehri River, while Nullah Palkhu in Wazirabad is experiencing moderate flooding.
Low-level flooding continued at Kalabagh, Chashma, Guddu and Sukkur along the Indus River, as well as at Head Nari on the Nari River.
The authority has forecast high level flows at Marala on the Chenab River, while Khanki and Qadirabad are expected to experience low to moderate flows.
Water levels are also likely to rise in the Jhelum, Ravi and Kabul rivers, along with their tributaries. Medium to high flows are expected in streams connected to the Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers.
The NDMA noted that the water situation in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers will also depend on water releases from Indian reservoirs.
Flash flooding is feared in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, as well as in central and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan.
The authority has also warned of urban flooding and rainwater accumulation in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta, and other low-lying urban areas of Sindh.
The NDMA advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel to flood affected areas and emphasized the tourists to practice extreme caution in mountainous regions, where heavy rains may trigger landslides, debris flows and flash floods.
Citizens have been advised to check the latest weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling, avoid crossing flooded roads or fast-flowing water, and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities.
The NDMA also advised travelers to carry drinking water, dry food, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, a power bank and emergency contact numbers during the monsoon season. Follow the instructions of the relevant authorities and completely avoid traveling on roads closed by the administration.
