Pakistan has achieved a major breakthrough in its fisheries sector by gaining access to Russia’s lucrative seafood market, opening new avenues for export growth and economic expansion.
Officials confirmed that Russian authorities have approved 16 seafood processing plants in Pakistan, allowing them to export directly to Russia for the first time. The move is expected to significantly boost Pakistan’s presence in a market valued at around $3 billion.
With current seafood exports hovering near $500 million annually, Pakistan is now aiming for a substantial increase. Initial estimates suggest exports to Russia alone could bring in up to $300 million, with overall seafood exports projected to rise to nearly $800 million in the coming years.
The development is being seen as a result of sustained diplomatic engagement and improvements in quality standards by Pakistani authorities. It also marks a strategic shift toward diversifying export destinations beyond traditional markets such as China, the Gulf region, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the United States.
Beyond Russia, the approval is expected to unlock access to the wider Eurasian Economic Union market. This includes countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, where demand for seafood is steadily increasing due to urbanisation and changing dietary patterns.
Industry experts believe this expansion could strengthen Pakistan’s fisheries sector, create new employment opportunities, and enhance foreign exchange earnings.
