The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has imposed a 60-day ban on illegal mining and placer gold extraction along the Indus and Kabul rivers. The ban covers districts including Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat, Karak, and nearby areas.
The ban has been enforced under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Authorities have warned that violators will face strict legal action. Machinery, vehicles, and equipment used for illegal mining may be confiscated.
Officials say the decision was taken due to the environmental and security risks posed by illegal mining. Reports indicate that unregulated mining has polluted rivers, damaged natural landscapes, and threatened public health.
Security concerns are also rising. Authorities say illegal mining can lead to law and order problems, conflicts among local groups, and smuggling of fuel used in excavation. Some organized groups involved in these activities have significant financial resources, which could make enforcement difficult.
The Mines and Minerals Department has been tasked to take action. Local administrations and police are required to provide full support. Additional personnel may be deployed if needed to ensure compliance.
The government has emphasized that petrol, equipment, and machinery used in illegal mining will be seized, and violators will face penalties under the law.
Meanwhile, oil and gas exploration is showing progress in the province. Pakistan Petroleum Limited has reported significant reserves in Kohat district. Drilling at the Baragzai X1 well in the Nasapa Block began on June 30, 2024, reaching a depth of 5,170 metres.
The well produces 225 barrels of crude oil per day and 1.01 million cubic feet of gas. The flow pressure is measured at 190 pounds per square inch gauge. Officials say the discovery will boost local energy supply and help reduce dependence on imported fuel.
In addition, the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited announced a gas and condensate discovery at the Dars West-3 well in Sindh’s Tando Allah Yar district. The well was drilled to a total depth of 2,100 metres in the Lower Goru Formation. Testing confirmed that the well is producing gas and condensate effectively.
