PTCL returns to profit, eyes 5G launch amid strong turnaround

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has reported a return to profitability after more than four years, marking a major financial turnaround supported by the recent consolidation of Telenor Pakistan into its operations.

The company announced a net profit of Rs3.1 billion for the first quarter of 2026, compared to a loss of Rs4 billion in the same period last year. Officials said the improvement reflects stronger performance across broadband, enterprise, wholesale, and mobile segments.

PTCL Group President and CEO Hatem Bamatraf said the company is entering a new phase of growth following structural changes and the ongoing merger process between Ufone and Telenor Pakistan. He added that customers will benefit from improved service quality once integration is fully completed.

The group also confirmed plans to launch 5G services in May, after its subsidiary Ufone received regulatory clearance for commercial rollout. This marks a significant step in Pakistan’s transition toward next-generation telecom services.

Financial officials noted that operating profit surged sharply during the quarter, driven by improved business performance and merger-related consolidation effects. However, they also cautioned that external geopolitical tensions could affect costs, particularly in borrowing and fuel prices in upcoming quarters.

PTCL CFO Nadeem Khan said global uncertainty, including ongoing regional conflicts, may create financial pressure in the second quarter, but the company has prepared mitigation strategies to manage risks.

Meanwhile, PTCL’s banking arm, Ubank, also reported improved earnings, contributing to the group’s overall recovery.

Despite strong financial results, management declined to comment on geopolitical or shareholder-related issues, stating that such matters fall outside operational disclosures.
