Peshawar bans protests, sit-ins and rallies under section 144

PESHAWAR: The district administration in Peshawar has imposed Section 144 for seven days, prohibiting protests sit-ins and rallies across the area during the restriction period.

According to the official order issued by the district administration, the restrictions have been introduced in view of potential security risks near sensitive installations and major roads.

The administration stated that public gatherings and processions could create security concerns particularly around important infrastructure and sensitive locations. It also warned that such events could provide opportunities for individuals seeking to cause disturbances.

Under the order gatherings of five or more people have been prohibited for the specified period. The administration has also banned the display and waving of weapons as part of the measures introduced to maintain public order.

The restrictions cover several forms of public assembly including demonstrations sit-ins and rallies. Residents, political groups, organisers and other members of the public are expected to comply with the directives while the order remains in effect.

Section 144 is a legal provision commonly used by authorities in Pakistan to impose temporary restrictions on public gatherings and certain activities when officials consider such measures necessary for maintaining public order or addressing security concerns.

The latest decision comes with an emphasis on protecting sensitive installations and ensuring security along major roads in Peshawar. However, the supplied announcement does not specify the exact locations covered by the restrictions or provide further details about any exemptions.

Residents and organisers planning public events should consult the official notification or contact the relevant district authorities for clarification about the order’s scope and duration.

The restrictions are scheduled to remain in place for seven days beginning from the date specified by the administration. Any extension, modification or withdrawal of the order would depend on a further announcement from the relevant authorities.
